Hi,

When I play a game (elite:dangerous) with Turbo Core on in the bios, I get fps drop from 70-80 to 10-20ish which will ramp up again in secs.

When I check cpuz at the moment of the drop the core speeds (and multiplier) go down: from 3600ish to 1300ish.

According to HW monitor the actual temp values at the time (I tab out) are 55-ish, but max measured is 64ish.

Now to my questions:

-I know max pref temp on my cpu is 62 max. Should I look at the actual (current) value/or the max value for determining if im in a good zone?

-If the max 64 is the problem: do you think that thermal throttling is causing the clock speed dropping?

-With Turbo off my max temp is 51 degrees when playing and 31ish idle, why is there such a big difference?

mobo asrock 970 extreme 4
8 gb of Kingston Hyperx 1600
GPU Gtx660 (gigabyte windforce edition)
Win. 8.1 64

P.S. With turbo core off I dont get the drops. So why not play with it off? I will, if my you think my cpu is being damaged. But Id like to utilize what I payed for I guess lol. Oh, and im not ocing.

Cheers,

Solution
Turn off Cool and quiet in the BIOS. In the advanced power options area of the power category located in control panel go to minimum processor state and change the value to 100%. Make cure under cooling policy, which is just below minimum processor state, it is set to active. You shouldn't need to turn off turbo core to keep the cpu from dropping below the target frequency. Try those changes and see how it works. If it still does it we can get into it a little more.

Hey,

I did as you suggested. I still get the fps drops ingame, and cpuz is still showing periodic clocks (core#0) speeds dropping from 3600 to 1300 and back up.

Enabling Active Cooling has brought my max temp down from 62ish to 56ish though. I am very happy with that. Now, I can leave Turbo Core on without worrying.

Now to get rid of those fps drops!
Cheers,

P.S. It is fixed! I disabled APM, Core C6, and Enhanced Halte State. I have a stable cpu core speed now, no more fps drops, and I shaved another 3 degrees centigrade so that now when playing instead of 62ish I get around 52ish temps...aint that weird!

P.P.S. The above did not fix it. Little did I know but turning off APM while Turbo is set to auto is the same as turning auto off, my cpu core stayed at 3500. However, setting APM to enabled instead of auto, let the Turbo do its work AND took care of the fps drops; the core does not throttle down anymore which it did with APM set to auto.

P.P.S I celebrated too soon. The fix did not hold. Only way to counter the drops was to turn off APM and the turbo.
Darkbreeze - thank you for the feedback man!

I had the same issue. And thanks to this thread. I was able to turn off the core performance boost and this problem was solved. Thanks. I almost buy a new motherboard
