fault wirh laptop

General note: you did not give enough information (Laptop brand and type, operating system name and version). This seems to be a software problem but could also originate from a hardware fault. First make sure that the hard drive is phyiscally OK. In some laptop models there is a hard drive check built-in into the BIOS and more. Try to access the BIOS and check what hardware tests you can do an run them to see if the hardware is OK.
I would take the drive out and ckeck it with an other computer but this requires additional hardware.
Try to check the hardware first and come back with more information later.
