Hi everyone, first post after being a long time lurker :)

I'm in the process of upgrading my PC and I know very little about RAM. I was curious if the 16GB Corsair XMS 3 DDR3 1333 I have will work well with the i7 4790K/MSI Gaming 7 combo I just picked up? I know the 1333 is compatible as long as I don't OC but I do a lot of gaming/streaming/video editing and was told early on that it's better to have more RAM for multitasking. I'm on the fence about keeping the 16GB of 1333 or just going 8GB of 1600 or 1866. If the 1333 will be enough to handle those tasks I'm going to be upgrading my GPU from a AMD 6870 to an Asus R9 280 instead.

Any help would be greatly appreciate. Thanks.

Welcome to the Tom's community.
1333 MHz is just enough, but 1600 or 1866 MHz RAM with CAS Latency of 9 is the sweet spot for gaming.
16GB is more than enough for gaming, while it's perfect for video editing.
What I would suggest doing is get 1x8 or 2x4GB of 1600/1866 MHz RAM.8GB is going to be just enough, and you can feel free to upgrade to 16GB of RAM in the future.
Hope this helps. :)

I'd stick with the 16GB of 1333, the additional DRAM in most cases is going to overcome the slight performance gain you'd see from 8GB of 1600 sticks, see how it does for you and be keeping your eyes open for a sale on 2x8GB 1866 or so - that would provide a worthwhile jump, going to 2x4GB 1600 doubt you'd see much of anything and might even hinder you

I'd definitely get 16gb of 1333, in gaming there is no real noticeable difference from 1333 to 2400 even. Additional RAM can also extend the life of your SSD if you're using one: In essence, there is no such thing as too much memory in a desktop with solid-state storage. The more RAM you add, the better off endurance looks, and the more I/O performance you get from the storage subsystem.

Thanks so much for helping everyone. I decided to stick with the 16gb of 1333 for now and pick up the new GPU instead. Once my PSU arrives and I finish the build I'll see how everything runs and upgrade if needed.
