FX6300 Underclocking Under Load

Hi guys,

I've been having some issues with the AMD FX6300 since I bought the damn thing last year.

Currently I have an overclock of 4.4Ghz, with my voltage set to 1.43v. All coolnquiet and CStates are disabled.

Under idle, the CPU will sit at the 4.4 quite happily, but as soon as I run OCCT for around ten seconds, one core will drop down to 3Ghz, then another and so on, until all 6 cores are running at that speed. Then, once the CPU hits 50 Degrees, all 6 cores will drop down to 154.7Mhz for a few seconds. After this, the cycle will repeat.

I've tried two different ASUS motherboards, tried Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, and I can't shake the feeling that I should've just stuck with my 965BE :p Below is an image showing the problem.

Is it just something stupid I've missed? Because I really don't know where to go from here.

Thanks for reading.

AH! This is both fantastic and disappointing news, thank you!

Would it be safe to just run the chip at the overclock it's running at, and just leave it to downclock? As it only really does it in CPU stress tests...

Urgh. Yessir.

I'll buy me another M5A78L-M/USB3 and run it stock til then. *shudders*

Many thanks, have a great day now.

Look no further. Get a UD3P. Cheap and won't get thermal throttling anymore.

Really?? Holy crap. I'll try with your voltage and see where it gets me.

I have two 120mm fans on my side panel, but you're right, I'm sure it was getting pretty toasty.

All turbo core and APM crap was off.

Update - I have tried 4.4 @ 1.38, it seemed okay. Then I went into hwinfo and saw that my motherboard was hitting 50 degrees. I'm going to leave the CPU at stock for now :)

Nice board, but I'm planning a Bitfenix Prodigy M build for the future, and I think I'd struggle fitting one of those in there :p

Know of any better mATX alternatives to the M5A78L-M/USB3?

No good AM3+ boards in the mATX form factor, that one is one of the better with 1 gigabyte board.

I'm using the gigabyte 78lmt-usb3 rev 5.0, It's the vest mATX board available right now. It has a heatsink on the VRM. It's not the best board for overclocking but will handle medium overclocks very well. Haven't heard of anyone frying their's. There are other mATX that were made with the 880 chipset but you would have to buy used or "new" from ebay or from unkown vendor through amazon.

Yeah, I saw this board, my other option is the M5A78L-M/USB3, which has 140W CPU support and the capability to overclock the memory... But I may well go for one of these :) I won't be watercooling or anything, so the overclock won't be that serious.
