Hello! I have a problem with my external disk (WD My Passport, 250 GB). Lately, my computer (I have Windows 8) began to not recognize it and I had to unplug it and plug it back in and then it was ok. And then it started to not regonize it at all. I plugged it into my friend's computer (with XP) and the message appeared that the password recovery was tried too many times and that I should unplug-plug it again (which I did several times and didn't help). And now on my computer again, when I plug it it shows as driver CD (D:)  and I can't access my files, but only some files that I think are essential for the disk to work (is this logical? - there are maps "Extras", "Users Manuals" and files "Autorun", "Unlock" and others). It also shows that disk has a capacity of only 614 MB and that it's all occupied. What could be wrong? I have very important things on my external disk as I'm a teacher and only on the disk I have all the files that I need. Please, help me. Thank you very much!

Well it's very unwise to save your important stuff on just one hard drive with no backups on a different drive. All hard drives fail sooner or later, and with external ones it's usually "sooner".

Contrary to what you may think, no files are required on the drive for it to work properly.

Test the drive with "WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows":

Don't worry if your drive is not the same model as the one shown on the page, it doesn't make any difference.
