HI there! I have been using a very small, weak Acer netbook for a couple of years and my Mom just gave me her old but barely-used sony vaio laptop.

I have had my little netbook hooked up to my TV via HDMI all this time, and it comes in very handy because I homeschool and we can all be viewing the same thing at the same time, but of course the netbook is slow and can't handle a lot at once.

My Mom's Vaio is much faster and stronger, but it doesn't have an HDMI port... is there another way I can hook it up to my TV?

The Vaio model is PCG-7133L. Thanks so much! :) I would love to just BUY a better laptop but am very broke at the moment, lol..

According to the specs this model should have a VGA port on it. If your TV is a flatscreen TV it probably has a VGA port on it too. In that case all you need is a VGA cable to go between the two. The difference is that you won't get Audio on the TV which may or may not be important.

Hi -- it's got a few different ports but I don't know what they are. They aren't labeled... one of them looks kinda similar to a monitor port but it's gray... to the left of it is a very vague symbol -- kind of looks like a squatty rectangle with rounded edges, lol. Excuse my idiocy -- I really am not very familiar with hardware! :)

The TV does have VGA, but if I used this adapter, would I get sound? The description at Walmart says "with sound," but that seems iffy to me if all it does is create a VGA port from the HDMI port and VGA to VGA does not allow for sound... what do you think? (thank you soooo much for the replies -- very helpful!)

Ok, well thank you so much, Nathan! You've been a huge help. I'm guessing the pic I posted is a VGA port then? I will find a VGA cord and we'll just have to do without the sound for now! :) It's definitely better than nothing, and the speakers on the Vaio are pretty good.

I would first check your TV to see what type of connections it has. No need to get an adapter if you don't need one. If your TV has a VGA port it's almost certainly going to have an a regular Audio in jack. If it does just get an Audio patch cable.

<edit>
This adapter does support audio provided you have an audio patch cable. There are cheaper adapters on Amazon that also support audio, but like I said check to see if you need it first.

Ah, ok. So since my tv does have a VGA port, I CAN get sound if I pair a VGA cable with an audio patch cable. (TV does also have audio-in jack!). Awesome! Thanks again to both of you!
