Okay, I've heard this many, many,MANY times in the past few months, the 256 bit bus (in the GTX770 4gb-version) is not enough to use the entirety of the 4 gigs of vram in the gphx card. Can someone explain to me WHY this is so?

I have conflicting data, there is this one man(link shown)who says that the bus size is independent of the vram, to wit:

LINK!

But, as I am sure a lot of people who are reading this have read on many forums, there are numerous forums that downplay the 4gb vram on the GTX 770 4GB as an unnecessary addition and even on some places, gone so far as to say that the extra 2GB shows NO performance gain:

(I dont have a link to back up that last statement, but definitely remember reading it)

If it is true, then why do manufacturers continue making (and more importantly people continue buying) these extra GB cards like the GTX770-4GB or the GTX780-6GB? AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, if this is true, and if the rumour mill is to be be believed, why is nvidia making a 4gb GTX 980 with a 256 bit bus and, well whaddaya know, 4GB VRAM??

IF it is not true, why is it such a popular opinion among the masses?

In this day and age you have to ask why a company would do such a thing to make more money? Its marketing plain and simple. Go see how many cards there are with DDR3 VRAM that have 4gb on them. I bet theres more than a handful. No way in heck a low end DDR3 vid card can use all that memory, but they sell. People equate more VRAM with more power. And most times that is not the case. Unless you are using resolutions higher than 1080p. Then the extra VRAM comes in handy.

Is this what you're saying, that 4gb vram is only useful when playing at resolutions greater than 1080p ( or if I may extend the question a little bit) higher AA and textures and etc? Because then the statement " The extra 2gb vram is utterly useless" would be false, yes?

It is and it isnt. For the 770, and I cant say this for sure as ive never owned one, but im sure at resolutions greater than 1080p, the extra VRAM would be useful for the extra pixels and whatever eye candy you want to turn up.
But with something like a 640 GT with 4gb of DDR3 VRAM it would be utterly useless. I have no data to back that up, but im sure there are benchmarks out there thatll show you what the 2gb version does at higher resoultions and what the 4gb version does at those same resolutions. Cant say for sure tltl be better, but in my opinion, im sure the extra VRAM does help.
