Hello, happy to be a part of this community, need some help with my oc, just starting to get into it and need some expert advice, any help will be great. I just build a gaming PC, currently running the 4690k with CPU cooler v8 gts on a msi z97 gaming 5, currently oc i5 to 4.4 with 1.141v I ran intel stress test 2 times for 10 rounds. Passed, ran occt for 20 min, passed, ran prim95 and when getting to the 7th hour prim95 stopes test, says fatal error rounding was 0.4984872631, expected les then 0.4
Hardware failure detected
1 error 0 warnings only shows it this on core #4

Dose this mean I need more volts? Or dose this mean that maybe my CPU got to hot and should maybe bring it down to 4.3? If anyone has any info It would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
Which version of Prime95 are you running? I would not use any version higher than v. 26.6 as the later versions really load up the FPU and the AVX instruction set. The result is an abnormal CPU running state with very high CPU Temps.

Keep your CPU Core Temps below 90*C. when stress testing and below 75*C. under normal operation. Also, do not exceed 1.300 v. on Vcore.

Hi,

I strongly suggest you setup the following OPTIMAL configuration and tests to verify your system is stable:

#0: Download motherboard chipset driver and install, then FAN software and configure if you haven't done so (i.e. for CPU fan 50% load until 40degC then ramp up to 100% load at 100degC or similar)

#1: Update your motherboard BIOS if newer exists.

#2: Choose "XMP" in the BIOS for your CPU/DDR3 memory settings then save.

#3: Run MEMTEST for a complete pass (about 30 minutes for 8GB). www.memtest.org

#4: run both the INTEL CPU diagnostic (Intel site) then Prime95 memory tests

Other:
a) When you choose "XMP" verify the CPU defaults to about 4.1 or 4.2GHz (depends on the motherboard) and that your memory frequency looks correct (i.e. 1866MHz if that's what it's rated for).

Choosing "XMP" will default all of the CPU settings to that profile including voltage. This mode also runs cooler (thus quieter). Note that changing the voltage is a common cause of instability.

b) MEMTEST may need the boot order changed. If you use the DVD method and you still boot to Windows not the DVD, then make sure the Boot Order has the DVD drive as #1, then the Windows drive as #2.

Ok. All my software is up to date. And I set XMP on from the start and ram reading correctly so far. I will try everything else also. I would really like to see if I can get a stable 4.4, my temps seem really well with all the test so far my temps are good while I have this overclock, I nearly ever go over 73c under load.

Thanks guys. Down loaded prim95 v 26.6 ran for over 20 hours no crashes or errors. Ran it at 4.5. Nearly ever got up or over 72c, ran intel burn test, 10 rounds, says it's stable, never went over 70c, tempted to go for 4.6????? Or should I just call it a win and stay at 4.5 at 1.195v??

That is a good OC.

You have room to go further. Whether or not you do it is your call.

Thanks, I ran prim95 over 24hrs, occt 20 mins and IBT 10 rounds, all passed, any other test you can think of that might catch somthing thise missed? Or I am I pretty much set on a stable oc?

Also I wanted to ask, my mobo has 2 PCI e slot, both 16x 3.0, dose it matter what slot I use? I put my msi 770 4g on slot 2 and it's reading as x8 instead of x16?

That is a very good round of stress testing. You can pretty confidently say that your current OC is stable. You never know with 100% certainty when OC'ing though. Put it to the test with your everyday applications and games.

As far as the PCIe slot problem, check the mobo manual and see which slot they recommend for GPU. Do you have any additional PCIe hardware, like a sound card or a Wi-Fi card?

Ok thanks, and no I don't just the gpu, mobo booklet says it recommends on the first slot. But since theyare both 3.0 x16 I thought it wouldn't make a diff, I ran the latest 3dmark from steam free demo, ran the fire strike and got a score of 7321, it places me as better then 78% then other users, would you say this is a good score for my card or should I try placing it in the first PCI e to see if there's a diffrence?

I would definitely try Slot #1.

Ok will do and I'll let you know the outcome. I was just reading around and it looks like that score it's actually pretty good compared to others with same gpu, I've found that it's around the same if not better from what I have read, regardless I will try PCI e 1 and see what happens. Thanks again.
