My LaCie LittleDisk just clicks when I plug it into a USB port. The computer (Mac OSX 10.6.8) doesn't mount the disk so no icon appears on the desktop. How can I retrieve the data?

Solution
clicking noise from a hard drive indicates mechanical drive failure. The read/write heads are jammed up against the platters causing damage to both the platters and the heads.

You should always back up your important data to a second hard drive in preparation for such an event.

Only a specialist data recovery service can recover data from a hard drive that's in such a condition, but even they will be unable to rescue data that is/was on the damaged parts of the platters.
