ASUS P8P67 Pro - USB Keyboard Not Detected/USB Mouse too sometimes

Hey guys,

So I bought a Steelseries Apex keyboard to replace my old keyboard (some HP OEM keyboard that was using PS/2) and when I plug it into the back of the computer (USB 2.0 hub), the keyboard was not detected and apparently was not even powered on during the POST. Only until when the computer got to the login screen did the keyboard turn on and was usable. Seems like it works in Windows but not during POST?

I tried different USB ports (all 2.0, didn't bother doing 3.0 of course) and still did not work.

The weird thing is that my USB Mouse does not have issues like this since it turns on as soon as I turn on my computer and can use it in the BIOS UEFI. Or well, it didn't have issues until after I got the new keyboard. Before, my USB mouse had no issues when it was connected to pretty much any USB port in the back but now, it does not want to turn on until after it gets to the Windows login screen.

I did notice that if I were to plug my USB mouse into the front USB port panel, it seems to work like a charm and turns on when it POST so I tried that with my USB keyboard and it unfortunately has no effect...

The PS/2 old keyboard can still be detected during POST and I found an HP USB Keyboard and connected to the front USB port and that was detected by the computer during POST but I'm going to try to see if it will work in the back.

In the BIOS, Legacy USB should be enabled (not Auto) but even then it's still no good.

I was wondering what do you guys think is the issue or what should I do?

I hope I won't have to RMA the keyboard, had to RMA a few things before and I'm just getting sick of RMA-ing.

Thanks for all the help!!

UPDATE: I just tried testing the HP USB keyboard with the back USB ports and it did not work. Seems like this may be more of a motherboard issue but not sure.

Solution
The same thing happened to me. My USB keyboard was not available during POST (impossible to update BIOS settings), but worked fine in Windows. It seemed like it wasn't even powered up until Windows started. I have an ASUS P8P67 PRO rev 3.0 motherboard with BIOS rev 1502.

The solution was to unplug all devices connected to USB3 (superspeed) ports on the motherboard. I had one such cable going to a USB3 hub in a monitor - and apparently the EFI BIOS didn't like that.

Yes, I have BIOS v3602, latest for that board.

It is also Rev 3.0

I was thinking about removing the BIOS battery but I just remembered that I removed the battery not too long ago so I don't know if clearing the CMOS will help.

Yeah.

I had this issue before I had drivers installed and even after with drivers installed. The issue with the keyboard not turning on only happens when windows is not loaded.

I installed windows 8 and when it loads the OS, the keyboard finally turns on with any USB hub port, same with the mouse. I'm just figuring out if there is some setting I am missing in the motherboard to fix this keyboard not turning on issue during POST

I checked the options within the UEFI Bios settings, all I could really find relatable to the issue is the USB options which is to enable or disable the USB Legacy which I played around and tried all settings but no luck. There is also a setting that says usb 3.0 something but I doubt that setting will make any difference. Anyway, I did hear someone did try to get a custom BIOS from ASUS and it seem to work for them but what are the chances of that happening where they would make one for me as well if I were to contact ASUS?

Hey thanks for your input! I'll definitely give that a try while I wait to hear back from ASUS. this will be annoying if I have to unplug any usb3 devices since I normally have a USB 3 external and USB 3 powered hub(7 ports) attached

I have similar problems with my P8P67 Rev 3.1. These are caused by an USB 3.0 hub. I tried different hubs (Anker and pluggedIn) and found that when the USB hub is plugged into any USB 3.0 slot, my Logitech keyboard (USB 2.0, not wireless!) is not recognized until Windows 7 started.

I found no solution so far except for removing the hub when I need the keyboard to access the BIOS... :-(
