re installing xp operating cd due to a new hard drive same size as last one (note- orig system came with sata
a 250 hard drive this one is a 60 as was last one, also orig system xp media and then man got this hp pavilion laptop from installed vista on it, I have xp pro cd operating disc from old latop) at first it was not recognizing the hard drive when I attempted to load xppro c operating cd, so now disabled the hard drive in start up bios- and it loaded finally -- NOW at : The following list shows the partition and unpartioned space on this computer
use the up and down keys and select the item in the list:
* to set up windows XP on the selected system, press enter
* to create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C
*to delete the selected partition, press D

5732 MB disc 0 ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi{MBR}

C: partition 1 [system Rese]{NTFS} 100 MB <75 MB free>
D; Partition 2 {NTFS} 57129 MB <45614 MB Free>

Install Delete

Not sure if that is enough space on either choice and also if the fact I disabled hard drive in order to get it to get this far on the install of CD for Xp is affecting the space it is showing- this is all greek to me thank you

Okay hold it, stop, wait! Your mixing many things up and causing problems.

" I disabled the hard drive in bios " - Okay your saying (above) you only have a 60GB drive and I assume a DVD drive correct? If you 'disable' the HD in BIOS then you can't "see it" when you try to install Windows, it only sees the DVD as the ONLY drive that...
The HD looks used, and basically needs to be wiped. I would suggest getting and making a DBAN CD to wipe the drive from start, then when it reboots, select the BIOS option to BOOT FROM the CD to start your install.

IMHO I think your wasting money and time. If you have this OLD of a system, it needs to be replaced, and is much cheaper to replace it then to keep pushing it along. First off XP is NOT supported anymore, so you will / may have problems finding drivers / updates for it to be 'stable and compatible' with 2014 applications, much less just anything 'you get off the web' (i.e. like Chrome, Firefox, etc.).

Second to that, all the parts of a PC are ONLY guaranteed to work for 3 years, after 3 years of 'normal usage' (normal business day 8 hours a day 5 days a weeks) the parts WILL FAIL. That can be the single resistor on the mobo for the power 'dies' and now the system won't 'turn on at all', to the HDD failing (as happened to you), etc.

COST wise is MUCH less expensive then people realize. For a generic 'get on the Internet, type a letter, watch youtube' you can get a laptop for $249 at Walmart, and in fact a Chromebook that does all that is one of the most popular sales right now http://www.tomshardware.com/news/chromebook-acer-chrome-google-android,27521.html

What you get is a much 'better' investment, for example normally at least a 600GB drive, 10x your drive; 8GB of RAM, very light weight in comparison, 802.11n or 802.11ac wireless (802.11b/g is not supported and most places are TURNING OFF B/G WIFI signals to this to 'speed up' the connection for everyone else using 802.11n minimally), nevermind the faster processor, etc. So where it takes many 'minutes' to load a webpage (for example) it happens in seconds on one of these 'newer' system, saving you time and sanity.

yes recognize this, however it had 60 gb hard drive before and was sufficient, only thing is now that I disabled the hard drive in bios to run the program install of xp pro 2002 it only shows 2048 MB in total ram so tried to enable the hard drive and it would not boot up went to blue screen error so back to disable in bios now attempting to add drivers and get wifi working for now til next week

If you 'disable' the HD in BIOS then you can't "see it" when you try to install Windows, it only sees the DVD as the ONLY drive that exists. As I mentioned, you need to ENABLE the drive, then instead change the BOOT ORDER that the DVD Boots first OR when you see BIOS screen hit the key (F11, F12,, etc.) that it says CLICK .... To Change BOOT ORDER. Boot order is the ORDER in which the system will LOOK FIRST, SECOND, THIRD, etc. for a OS to load from, the DVD has a OS to help INSTALL, so you want to BOOT First the DVD.

There is no such thing as XP PRO 2002, Windows XP was released in 2002 and came in several editions, but NONE were 'numbered' by a year, only the type (Pro, home, etc.). That your indicting your using XP with NO SERVICE PACKS is a very bad thing. AGAIN XP is NOT supported, so you may NOT get all the patches, service packs, etc. you will need to make this stable. THINK of it this way, at one time all cars were LEAD GAS only, then they changed over to UNLEADED, and told everyone needed to get new cars because they would STOP selling LEAD gas, and you can't use UNLEADED in a LEADED tank as it will cause the engine to DIE. Some people (like your doing) refused to believe they ever stop selling LEADED gas so they kept their cars and didn't change. Now one day you decided to 'rebuild' this LEADED car, and now your asking why your having so many problems and such when there is no LEADED Gas stations anymore.
