I have a Gigabyte GA Z68X-UD3H-B3 Ver 1.3 (Rev. 1301, 12ME-Z68XU3H-1301R) Socket 1155 mobo that won't boot, even into BIOS. It tries but just shuts down and restarts continuously. The board works fine with an i3, and is supposed to be compatible with the i5 2500 (socket 1155) I've tried resetting the BIOS, removing the battery for a few seconds......nothing......Could a BIOS update have anything to do with it? How can I get this i5 to boot up?

Solution
Removing the battery is exactly the same as resetting the CMOS.

I don't know of any board that will run an i3, but not an i5. or i7 for that matter.

The original specs say it will run all 3.

Are you sure the i5 works.

I assume the i5 has graphics, or you are using a dedicated card

Try updating the BIOS to the latest version. It's not likely to help in this case (the i5-2500K was one of the first Sandy Bridge processors released so presumably the first BIOS released supported it), but it can't hurt.

And yes, the exact CPU model has to be supported by the BIOS for it to work. While the CPUs are compatible in terms of sockets, each CPU model has or lacks a myriad of other features like turbo boost, VT-x, AES, etc. The BIOS needs to know which CPU is plugged in so it knows which of these features it can and can't use. If it doesn't recognize the CPU, it won't boot.

BIOS F4.

That is the first BIOS that supports the i5-2500K.

If you do update your BIOS, I recommend updating to F12 but not to the UEFI BIOS (U1L).

You'd need the i3 installed to update the BIOS if you presently have F3 or earlier. If you do have F4 or later then your issue is:
a) bad CPU?, or
b) incorrectly mounted CPU, or
c) ?

Not sure if forgetting the CPU power to the motherboard would do anything.

Other:
Not sure what you PAID for the i5-2500K but the i5-3570K was a better option if the price was comparable.
