Unless you have a 'RESTORE PARTITION' your 'friend' scammed you. A quick GOOGLE of that laptop shows it was sold in 2007, making it 7 years old, way past when someone would replace it. XP and VISTA are two DIFFERENT Windows versions, and NEITHER is supported, so that means DELL would NOT be able to even SELL YOU the Factory RESET CDs because they don't have them anymore.

For only $249 at Walmart you can get a under warranty, with support, current Windows that IS supported laptop. I would highly suggest that then this old beast. Buying a 'NEW' copy of Windows 8 to try install on this Dell is $179 off the shelf, and as you can see for $70 more your getting a BRAND NEW up to date and UNDER WARRANTY laptop.
