Manually running PCI-E x16 GPU in 8x mode

Running 4-way SLI on Gigabyte X99 Gaming G1 Wi-Fi takes 40 PCI-E lanes from CPU (16x+8x+8x+8x). Recently saw Swiftech Komodo NV Full-Cover GPU waterblocks, they're so thin, that I could fit a double-slot GPU in single PCI exp. slot. (after lil' bit of moddin'). Closer to the deal. My mobo have not only 4 PCI-E 16x/8x, but also 3 ~x1 slots. But runnin' 4-way sli takes from i7-5930k all 40 lanes. So, could I run 1 GPU (the one, thats runnin' in 16x mode) in 8x mode manually, to "save" some PCI lanes. Cuz if I'm gonna use those waterblocks, my GPUs wont block those x1 slots, and I could have a sound card maybe :p (or PCI-E SSD).

Sorry for that messy descr. I suck at explaining :C

I think the PCI-Ex1 doesn't count for that, but from what I know, it should automatically manage anything you need to get it to work for you, even if it does.

If not, you may be able to set it in the BIOS.

Though, from what I can read, the 16x may be directly connected to the CPU?
I really don't know what all that would mean, but that's all I really found.

You can always use a USB DAC, if all else fails though. :)
