I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with 4GB of memory. It's a 64 bit computer running Ubuntu 12.04. I want to upgrade it to 8GB. It has DDR2 800mhz memory. Can I buy memory with a slower speed like 677mhz? It's a lot cheaper. Or will that not work. I know it would be fine on a desktop, but what about a laptop?

You already have the maximim RAM size the laptop supports. 8GB will not work.
You probably have 2x2GB. Each memory slot supports 2GB maximum... so, it will not run with 4GB per slot, or a single 4GB module.

I know and that's what it says on Dell's website but other sources say that it does work.

It looks like 4GB total is officially supported, but the Crucial website is usually very reliable and there are numerous support site and forum entries referencing successful use of 2 x 4GB sticks in that laptop. Worst case, it doesn't work and you return the sticks.

677s should work also. If you're planning on pairing a new 677 stick with your current 800, they may not play well together and you don't have the same options as a desktop for adjusting voltages and timings to get them to work, so you'd probably be better off buying a matched pair.
