Hi,

I have a stock AMD FX8150 CPU idling at 47C in a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5 mobo

I've re-applied thermal paste twice, and the second time I switched to a "higher quality" paste. Temperature seemed to remain unchanged.

For cooling I have a Corsair H100 running at the lowest RPM setting (Any higher and it sounds like a jet engine is coming in to land on my house).

Running Prime95 with the FX8150 at stock clock settings, including CnQ and all power savings modes on, the chip can get as high as 61C. Again, this is on a H100.

When I attempted to OC I could barely keep the chip below 70C @1.45v vcore. I eventually gave up because I think the heat issue was making it unstable even at 4.4-4.5Ghz

Is this just a HOT chip, or am I doing something way wrong? I've overclocked before, and never seen this. I've made sure my H100 (about 2 years old) is free of dust on the Rad and fans.

Thanks for any input guys!

T.

The low rpm is probably what's killing you, you could try updating the h100's fans. Or run push pull configuration if your case can support it.

I would look into a good low RPM performance fan, like Noctua's NF-F12

A better price to performance would be Cooler Masters JetFlo 120

That does sound like a hot chip, but it sounds like it can still be managed with a little upgrading.

Well, I CAN turn them up and I notice a very insignificant change in overall temperatures. I just leave them low for reduced noise.

You say "upgrading" but I have a H100.. For a retail kit I don't know what more could be considered an "upgrade" lol.

Like I said, upgrade that h100 with a push pull setup. Force more air through the radiator with 2 extra fans. 4 low rpm fans that put out 100 cfm will deliver better cooling.
