I'm going to be building a gaming /streaming PC around the end of October 2014 and was looking at m.2 ports on the Intel boards and was wondering if I could use them as a boot drive?

Hi,
I was thinking the same thing about a build I am planning but I found this article so make sure you check things out before you buy.

Thank you for the link to the article, it really helped me decide on a strategy to (hopefully) solve an issue I'm having with a recently built system:

System Description:
Case: RAIDMAX Super Viper
Power Supply: Seasonic 520W fanless (I replaced the PS)
Mother Board: Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H
CPU: Intel i7-4790K, with Stock Cooler
Memory: Patriot Viper 2x8GB Kit, DDR3, PC3-12800 1600MHz
HD: Crucial M500 240GB 6GB/s M.2 (2280-D2-B-M) SSD (SATA 4)
2nd HD: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB
Wireless Adapter: Trident N600 Wireless PCIe in PCIEX1.1 slot
Aero-Cool Touch-2100 Fan Controller

The m.2 I'm using is not on the compatibility list of the MB manufacturer. It does work, but I get a BSOD when the system is inactive for a while. The Fan Controller has temp sensors, so I'm going to place one of the temp sensors on the m.2 over the chipset area and see if my problem might be a thermal soak problem for the m.2. I'll update this post when I have an answer.

----- 44 min later:

I taped a thermal sensor to the M.2, I couldn't get the sensor directly on the controller chipset, so it's about .050" above the chipset and after 20 min, the temp is only a couple of degrees C above ambient - so thermal soak is probably not the problem.

I looked at the SSD review page, which lead me to this:

- which makes me feel a little better. Clearly the Crucial m.2 I'm using is bootable.
