Do I need a r9 290 vapor-x?

I'm only gaming at 1080p so do I really need a r9 290 or could I do with a r9 280x for a lot less or should I wait a bit as new cards are coming out (r9 285 plus more???)
Also pairing it with a i5 4690.

You could do with a R9 280X at 1080p and don't plan to upgrade the monitor to higher resolution or add more monitors.
You can get the R9 290 if you want max settings but to also ensure you can get over 60 fps.

If you can wait out for a month for the R9 285 non-reference coolers, then perhaps but its not a huge fps increase going with R9 285. You would be fine with a R9 280X.
