Is there a way to upgrade to Windows 8 without losing your files?

Solution

"Personal Files Only"
Exactly what it means....anything in the Documents folder tree. Current programs, no.

If you have Two computer drives, eg C: and D: then move all your files from the drive that are windows at probably C: to a different drive probably D: and then when you install windows 8 choose to install to C: not D: drive

Yes backup is important but its very small risk of corrupting data or losing it. You can make backup of your files on CDs,flashdrive or external hard drive. And make sure you take notice on amount of space in each drive so when pc asks you to which drive install windows to you can easally tell which one is which one by the amount of space as sometimes the names change

During the install, there will be the option to 'upgrade'. Usually, this keeps all your 'stuff'.

However....during any major change, software or hardware, you should have your critical data elsewhere and offline, just in case.
Click the wrong checkbox - poof
Power outage in the middle - poof
Some software screwup - poof

Better to be safe than sorry.
