Greetings,

I am looking to do a good value for money upgrade on my machine. I believe from my reading the CPU is the weakest link for my gaming habits (i.e lots of 25man raiding in WoW). I don't think I can get a solid upgrade in without changing the motherboard as well, which complicates my limited budget significantly.

Current System Specs:

AMD A8-6600k APU
Radeon R9 270 2048MB
PSU: 550W (Unbranded)
8GB DDR3 1600MHZ (unbranded)
Gigabyte Systems branded 'Fm2+ - uATX' Motherboard

What extra bits would I have to purchase (new board, cooler, thermal paste etc) to get a chip like the AMD FX-8350 in there?

And failing that, what's the best chip I could actually get in there without changing the motherboard and/or cooler?

Thanks for your time.

Sadly it's more of a case that I will need to desperately try and find the cash for any decent value upgrades recommended. Cheaper the better for a decent performance boost.

I'd say everything looks fine but cpu like you said so a i5 4690k with a z97 board will be in 350-400 dollar ballpark

Thanks for the tip. I should have mentioned that I am in the UK so I'll get gouged on the price a bit.

Just out of interest, what kind of performance / fps upgrade would I be looking at if I got a more powerful chip that goes in the FM2 socket compared to your suggestion?

I live in Uk too, it'd be around 300 pounds, I'd say 3-50% increase in performance overall, I'd say it'll help in gaming and multitasking the most as the cores are much stronger

Yes those are the two places I tend to use the most. Replacing the motherboard and the chip requires a serious amount of cash juggling. I take it you both feel like theres little to no point in putting a different chip that uses the fm2+ socket in there? In terms of performance increasing potential.

nah, fm2 is quite old, get z97, you'll need a fresh windows copy too
