Is it worth waiting for the GTX 970/980?
I'm building a gaming computer and was planning to get a GTX 780 (budget for a GTX 780 ti). I saw that the 970/980 details are to be released September 19th and was wondering if it's worth waiting till October to get one.

I am currently using a laptop that is kinda breaking down on me that is having to be run off an external hard drive (the internal one kinda failed on me). This means that I kinda want a computer soon so is it worth waiting?

More about : gtx 780 wait gtx 970 980

I would at least wait until September to see what they might offer, then decide if you want to wait until release.

If its between £500-£600 then just wait till september when prices will go down and get the GTX 780 as the new ones going to be very expensive. But if your budget is high then just wait for the september and get one of the new ones or get titan

There is no reason to get a Titan for gaming.
Either way its beneficial to wait at the moment.

If Titans price goes down it will be very well usefull to get as its future proof for long time which means you dont need to get another GPU anytime soon and you save money. So if the price of titan goes its price going to be just like GTX 780 now without the discount. Its so more worth than getting GTX 780

The titan wont go down in price because its not a gaming card, its aimed at the professional market for workstation applications, the release of the 900 series gaming cards has no affect on the professional market.

Even if the Titan went down in price, the GTX 780 ti is still better than the Titan black

http://www.pcgamer.com/uk/2014/05/08/gtx-titan-black-th.... You have to take into consideration that the graph is by nvidia themselves, they aren't going to admit their more expensive card is worse than a cheaper one. And when I mean better I mean higher FPS, Titan black still has more VRAM.

3D mark scores are hardly performance charts. Why would a company score their flagship card lower than their flagship gaming card?
The Titian black is simply a 780Ti slapped with 3 extra GB of memory and a bit more floating point performance.

So basically what you saying is Titan black more powerfull. 3D mark scores do matter as its tests the capability of graphics card to the max to see how much it can handle and how smoothly it can handle it and as you can see the Titan black can handle more and more smoothly than 780ti

Synthetic benchmarks are not equivalent to real world performance.
Floating point performance is also not performance, it helps in some applications such as video work, and heavy rendering, again NOT gaming.

The Titan black is only better at higher resolutions as it has more VRAM. Anything else and the 780 ti performs better.

Well in the end its your choice on what you want but either way i would recommend to wait for the new ones or just wait for 780ti discount

This is interesting because I'm planning the exact same thing.
Got my eye on the ASUS OC version of the 780 with intention to (hopefully) clock it past the original Titan levels.

Everything that I'm reading about the next series so far is somewhat disappointing. I'm at a moot point because the last thing I need to happen is for a new series to come out, with negligible performance gains, +200£ compared to the current line up and thus, suddenly, the current line up disappears.

Best outcome, the price comes down on the 700 series and I snap one up real quick.
Better outcome would be the 800/900 series coming out at a decent or equivalent price (Because Nvidia are totally known for that...).

Personally, I'm waiting until the mid-September announcement at least, I want to see the specs of these new cards before I take the plunge.
Rumoured specs aren't all that amazing though.

Never trust rumoured specs, none of them are from nvidia them selves, most of them are speculation on the spec and might not even be close to the actual spec.

True that, hence the waiting. But, even on Maxwell there isn't much further they can push 28nm.

Rumoured specs are all I have to go on until mid-September, and they're really not all that appetizing.

Yes thats what i thought i cant really think what could be some much different about Maxwell my guess its not big of a difference maybe stability and some performance improvements.

Also an attempt to reduce power use and heat. Whether they achieved it or not is another story

The 970 is gonna be £299 and the 980 is gonna be £399. Believe me or not that is from an extremely reliable source, each card will average out to 10% better performance with much lower tdp than its predecessors

The prices and power is only rumors and there is no guarantee that its true most likely false. If you so sure about the source can you please send us a link to check it out?

I have no link for you to check out- if there was a link on pricing do you not think it would be out by now? I just have a direct statement from a mate at nvidia with those prices. Believe me or not its utterly irrelevant to me i was just stating what i know and i highly highly suggest no one buying a 770 or 780 until after the 19th

Or maybe its bullshit who knows?? Maybe its just a wild guess? :)  Im just trying to help out OP by telling him patience will pay off... Guess we will have to wait after the 19th to find out if what i say is true

Well, despite those prices seeming about right, I'm still going to file this under the "I have a mate that works there lol" category of rumourmille.

Right next to "IGN".

Hey there, I actually just went to the Game 24 event where they released the 970/980 and they are definitely! Much better!
The 980 costs $549 and outperforms a 780ti so costs less and is better!
Also it is already out! They were released today, not just announced... So I would go grab a 980 as soon as possible! :)

P.s.
I didn't check the conversion to euros... But it seems like the guy above's source was wrong...
The 970 is $329.99
And the 980 is $549.99
Hope this helps :)

GTX 970/980 are here! They just popped up on Amazon and NewEgg less than an hour ago! No need to wait (more than for them to ship!)

Just placed an order for my EVGA 980!

Looks like Nvidia pulled a fast one on you, seeing the relatively equivalent prices of their 900 series

Ha, yup.

I'm debating with myself between the 970 and 980. Seemingly have quite a bit of time to do so because everywhere in the UK at the moment appears to be out of stock.

Really would like that 980 to drop by 50 quid, though.
