As the tital says i just got a new gtx 770 however my computer freezes at the motherboard splash screen everytime, is this a bios issue or psu issue?

OS-Windows 7 64 bit
Motherboard- Gigabyte 970A-D3
Ram- 12gb
CPU- AMD FX 8350 octo core
Graphics card(prior to problems)- Radeon 5800 series HD
PSU- 500 Watt

I'd lean towards the PSU as being the problem. 500W will be challenged with a 770. What make/model is it?

Also, just to make sure, did you connect the PCI-e power connectors to the GPU?

Fit an internal speaker and tell us the post code.

Its a dual channel mobo. Just use 2 x 4gb total identical ram sticks.

you can try to clr_cmos as well... sometimes motherboards act weird when you swap out graphic cards

i did a power consumption test and the psu is within 50 watts of being maxed out (with the new card) assuming i did the math right. the psu is a

SIGMA SP-500AB 500 WATT ESP 80+ Power Supply (had to pull out the old sheet to find that info)

Sigma... doesn't sound a like a quality PSU. Generally shady PSUs like that output less power than advertised. I'd recommend getting a new PSU from Seasonic or XFX that is at least 550W.

Sigma isn't terrible. It's an above average PSU that should be fine. But it'll be working pretty hard to power a system with a gtx770.

@OP
But I'd definitely try the suggestions by i7baby and intgar33

the psu is close to 4 years old now and just did the math again power sonsumption only comes out to around 443 watts

that's not how that works.

a 500W +80 psu will draw ~625W from the wall when under load (it will actually draw more then that, as almost no psu is at it's advertised efficiency under full load)... that's all that means. that said, old and cheap psus rarely can supply their full rated power.

no. look up clr_cmos... there are hundreds of instructionals on how to do this. (this is basically resetting your motherboard's bios)

your calculations could always be off. I always, always buy a PSU 100W above the requirments for safety. 50W is a small margin for such a high end card, not something I'd mess around with, not mention the minimum requirements for 650W

What about i7baby's suggestion of getting a system speaker so you can get a beep code for troubleshooting?

If you have one, it needs to be plugged into the intl spkr headr on yr mobo. See your manual.

You also need to check what bios type you have eg ami. ibm.

See http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm for relevant beep code.

So have you got an internal speaker or not? What beep code are you getting? http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm What bios type do you have (from your mobo specs)?

Also with your PSU, what make and model is it?

Install your mobo uefi and post the readings you're getting for 12v, 5v and 3.3v.

well got a new power supply for it its a 600watt and the problem remains......so i guess that means it must be the bios, when i had everything out of my tower i didnt see an internal speaker so i guess it was a differnt one i remember having one, where i pick one up for a "beep" test?

Did the beep test, it gave off one beep which means everything is normal, i received the same one beep when putting in my old graphics card (which still works fine). Guess i have to contact amazon and tell them they send me a bad card
