weird video card issue

i have an evga gtx 560ti, 2gb SC edition. today, all games that i play are unplayable. i only play arma 2 and arma 3 right now, but both are taking extremely long times to load. when the game finally does load, its like im running it on settings that are far above what its capable of, even in arma 2 (which doesnt require much cpu or gpu to run).

once arma 2 loads (arma 3 loaded and it was unplayable), the game goes from running smooth to a massive slow down for sometimes up to 10 seconds, then it picks up for a random number of seconds, then slows back down.

i have evga precision x open. no overclocking on my gpu, but my cpu (phenom II x 4 955) is overclocked on a 17.5x multiplier, 1.3 voltage and no BSODs ever.

the thing i noticed is, when the slowdown would happen in game, my video clock frequency goes from 900mhz to 405mhz. when it picks back up to 900mhz, the game picks back up.

its never done anything like that before, and im wondering if thats a sign that its on the way out. i already fresh installed the latest drivers for my card, clean install. the only other things i can think to test are taking it out and trying the onboard video card, see how it does, or plug it into my wifes computer, install arma 2/3 and see how it goes on hers. i ran VMST on my cideo card twice now, for about an hour, and no errors have been found.

before i format and reinstall windows (ive been planning on doing that anyways), what else can i try?

Solution

Power consumption/heat shouldn't be a concern when watching movies/surfing. Unless your graphics card is messed up, it will automatically downclock. The CPU does this as well.

I would only recommend power saving mode for laptops. Otherwise, it isn't going to really do anything for you. You'd be better off getting a smart switch instead if you want to save money.

thats what im about to do, but wouldnt you know it as soon as i was ready to tear down, arma 3 loads the way its supposed too and fps are normal. apparently im not the only one going through this, as a few others said their rigs did the same thing mine did, but eventually 'settled down' and fps went mostly back to normal.

i smart tested the SSD that the installs are on. im going to install arma 3 on the wifes computer, then swap the card to hers if it does it again.

-edit-

that was short lived. it started doing it again once i shut down arma 3. it looks like it may indeed be the hard drive, as the hard drive light was going nuts when arma 3 was running. once i shut it down. the hard drive light went back to flashing every now and then.

with arma 3 on, the activity light was almost solid on, but flashing A LOT.

Is it only a few games that are causing this issues or others as well?

all games, but i think i found the problem: my processor.

when i set the processor affinity to cores 3/4, the game runs perfectly... as much as it can on my system (25-35fps in the city). however, setting the affinity to cores 0 or 1 results in the heavy chop / fps loss i was complaining about. still testing though. this solution seems to work for arma 3. have not attempted it with arma 2 yet but i dont see why it wouldnt fix i: the issues are identical.

-edit-

yeah its the processor. i loaded in with all 4 cores, lag central. alt tab out and back in, still lag.

set affinity to proc 2 and 3, tab back in and lag is gone. fark me, gonna need a new processor now, or time to switch to an I5

Can't say that I've ever encountered a processor issue like this. Have you had the processor a long time?

iive had the processor for around 3 years but its been heavily overclocked the entire time (3.6-4ghz) and half that time i was learning about voltages n whatnot (i didnt overvolt it, but i left it on auto for longer than i should).

so its not really surprising that the processor is starting to die. ive been wanting to upgrade to an I5/7 anyways, so this is just an excuse. the problem is i was going to upgrade my wifes pc (she has an older quad core athlon) with this processor.. but not anymore :D

At least you should be able to use the motherboard and ram for the wife's build. Although with a replacement processor costing around 110, an apu might be a good choice depending on your needs.

im glad i didnt select an answer. i figured out what the REAL problem was: me.

completely forgot i turned the pc into low power mode to reduce heat/power while im just watching movies or web surfing.

turns out this causes games to take FOREVER to load.

put it back on balanced, games load up as they should. im an idiot....
