Sorry but your explanation of the problem is not precise enough.
- exact type of external HD ?
- size ?
- interface ?
- operating system?
I still have one tip for you to try.
What i have seen before is that some 2.5 inch external drives do not spin up or fail in operation because people do not use the supplied Y USB cable. With Y cable i mean that it has two standard USB plugs. One USB port is able to deliver 1 Amp and this is sometimes not enough for the drive, so manufacturers created these Y cables or supply an additonal cable with one power and one USB end which can be plugged into the drive and a second USB port. This way 2 Amps are available and if such cables were supplied they must be used.
If your drive spins up normally and you can hear it rotating, you most likely have a "normal" disk failure. One minute should be enough to get disk health information from a tool like "Crystal DiskInfo" or similar.
