Used or new Gpu on a budget

I've seen used 280x's going for as little as $160 and was wondering if buying used is a bad decision. I'm on a budget so would the lower cost be worth it being used?

Edit: If buying used is okay i would be able to go to a R9 290x instead of a 280x.

also, slightly off topic, would using a FX 8320 and a 290x bottleneck?

As you probably know any amd card on ebay right now from the 7000 series to the r7 and r9 series pretty much all went through hell with mining. A lot of miners just don't care about keeping the card cool and clean, all that they cared about when mining with it was how many coins they could get out, so a lot of miners didn't care for their systems and cards like most gamers would. Pretty much all amd cards don't let you transfer the warranty over, so you need to go through the buyer which also creates another problem. another thing to think about is that the cards probably have had over half of their life sucked out of them being used for 24/7 mining and also being caked together with a bunch of other cards. If you could find something like a used evga gtx 760 for around that price that would be a good deal because you can talk to the seller and have them transfer the warranty over to you

I found a EVGA GTX 760 2GB for just $20 more than the 280x. are they comparable?

I bought a slightly used r9 270x TOXIC for only 150 dollars. Saved like 60 dollars and got the same performance. It said that the card was installed and was used once. The guy was making and selling computers... No one bought it so he sold it much cheaper. I think it's safe to buy but pick the best condition not the cheapest price.

I would If I were you.. I got brand new head phone for half the price because the packing box was damaged. But still, there is always a chance of something being wrong. So do it at your own risk,but I would go for it.
