Here is the system I am leaning towards. $2000
NZXT Phantom 530 = $130
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H = $175
Intel Core i7-4790K = $340
EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB 03G-P4-3784-KR = $530
4x 4GB G.SKILL Ripjaws F3-12800CL9Q-16GBRL = $150
Samsung SSD 840 Evo 500GB MZ-7TE500BW = $260
Seagate Barracuda 3TB ST3000DM001 = $110
Corsair Hydro Series H100i = $95
Cooler Master Silent Pro M2, 1000 watts = $180
LG WH14NS40 Blu-ray Burner = $70
Will need a new Monitor also.

Gaming mostly
total budget about $2500 certainly under $3000 if possible

This system is recommended by MaximumPC for August 18, 2014 but now the Haswell E's are out

I built a system about 7 years ago and it is past time to do it again. Would be nice if a new rig would be good for several years without too many costly upgrades or changes.

Any advice is appreciated

That is a fine config . I would swap the 780 with the 780ti , and the psu to some corsair or seasonic with a maximum 700W , but 80+ gold and modular.
