What videocard to pick?

Oke, my friend is planning to game @ full HD resolution.

He can choose for a brand new Asus R9 280X directcuII 180 euro's (237$).
Or a used R9 290 MSI Gaming 4G 6 months old but looks good for 190 euro's (250$).

What should he pick?

I wouldn't trust a used R9 290; those were the most popular cards for Bitcoin mining 6 months ago, and if he's selling it that's highly suspicious since nothing is a worthwhile upgrade over it for gaming. There's too high of a chance it was worn horribly from continuous mining use.
