I have an hp laptop with windows 7 home premium. Since a month or so my laptop would automatically start decreasing my volume to zero. When I open the volume mixer and try to raise it , it starts decreasing again. I've tried updating the drivers but they already are on their latest version, tried reinstalling them as well. Please help !

Tried it. Didnt help. The issue was temporarily fixed after I woke up the laptop from hibernation but returned after a reboot. Thank you for answering though.

How can you tell the audio is decreasing, just by the sound getting lower or does the volume slider/meter appear and decrease on screen? If you have sound/brightness/etc keys on your laptop's keyboard (usually on the same keys as the function buttons (i.e. F1 through F12)) make sure the volume buttons aren't getting stuck or accidentally activating themselves somehow

When I click on the volume control icon in the taskbar menu , the slider is at zero. If I slide it up , it automatically keeps decreasing to zero. I don't have volume control on the function keys but i do have sort of a volume touchpad (Image:http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c0_sqpuUpdE/TkzeCJNv95I/AAAAAAAADJY/d-2j5GDXa1U/s1600/HP-Pavilion-dv4_33.jpg).

If you slide that up or down does it move the windows slider (the one on the taskbar)? If I had to guess I'd say that's bugging out somehow, have you tried cleaning it really well? Or possibly the plastic laptop case is pressing down on it somehow. Can you disable that sound touch-slider thing?

I want to say that my friend had exact problem like yours he have buyed a new lenovo laptop with win 7 and had the same sound problem like yours he tried everything but the problem was weird so he updated it to win 8 an the problem completely vanished.
I guess its a sound driver issue so i would recommend you to uninstall the sound drivers and install the latest sound drivers for your laptop.
