hey guys,

I recently bought myself an xfx r9 290x double dissipation video card. I didn't for a moment think my power supply would be a problem and am actually still not sure if my psu is a problem.

my psu: http://www.ms-tech.de/de/datenblatt/MS-N650-VAL.pdf

now, I have it all up and running. the psu only has one 6+2pin connector so I used two molex to one 6pin connector converter thingy that came with the videocard to meet the power requirements. computer will start up fine, in fact everything runs great. I even played some shogun 2 total war on highest settings with some minor lag when zoomed all the way in during the battle.

But that minor lag in shogun 2 and the random ctd's I get on another game(my only game that ctd's to desktop since the card change) that I did not have with my old videocard made me look up more information about the power supply requirements of the r9. During this search I found out the r9 needs 33A on the 12V rail?

as shown here: https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/power-requirements...

and mine only seems to have 18A. how is this all even running well right now I wonder?

So my question is: despite me being able to run my beefiest game(shogun2) quite well and nothing seemingly indicating to a power shortage on my system(apart from the ctd in one particular game) would it still be better to get another psu? and would I see improvements if I did get a better psu? for example the small lag that I DO have on shogun 2 when zoomed in completely dissapearing and/or the ctd's going away on that one game that now ctd's all the time.

the link is not opening for me can u give a direct link for your psu ?
and r9 290x is a very strong card dont use a low end psu with it invest on a good psu if u are using a high end GPU i would recommend EVGA G2 750 watt psu though wattage wise you will not need that much but it have 10 years of warranty and a great tier 1 psu with decent price.

thanks for the suggestion, I will get a new PSU with my next paycheck, but I still dont understand why everthing seems to work well while my PSU only has 18A and the R9 290x requires 33A. also keep in mind that this PSU used to power an AMD radeon 7970 which is also a very beefy card as well.

it will run but there is always a risk using a poor psu with a strong card & i think its 18 x2 = 36 amps.
yes 7970 is the modern r9 280x so yes its a good card and also power hungry and it needs 31 amps.

thanks man! Now that I look at it a bit better it seems to be 2x18 indeed. I understand it now.

thanks again!
