hello

im thinking of replacing my 660ti with a 770 or a r290

aswell as replacing my bulldozer fx4100 with a piledriver 8350

I have a ocz 750w psu, 8gb corsair vengeance ddr3 ram, and a gigabyte ga 78lmt s2p

would those two upgrades run fine and be an improvement? appreciate any help

More about : upgrading cpu gpu

The board will struggle with the 8 core. 660Ti to 770 is not a massive upgrade so the 290 sounds better.

Yes.. the MB is AM3+. You may have to update your BIOS. see here. It says it needs BIOS upgrade for FX processors.

It supports DDR3 1333 so make sure you get the correct RAM.

Also OCZ makes crap to good PSU's so you need to see the exact model to know if its any good. If it's Fatal1ty, it's likely a crap.

the R9 290 will be a way better choice, it can beat a 780 in allot of stuff so a 770 gets destroyed by it ;)
my reccomendation would be the Sapphire Vapor-X OC edition, its got the best R9 290 air-cooler on the market
but get a good cooler for that 8350, maybe something like the H100 etc.

would you recommend also upgrading the motherboard? or would it be substantial? ill check ouy the 290, if possible id prefer not to upgrade it but im open to it and would I get a great performance increase?

I would say upgrade your mobo to a M5A97 board. You will be able to use ddr3 1600, a PCI 3.0 and a FX 8350 without any problem. The DDR3 upgrade will bring substantial performance boost. No point buying a DDR2 which is a old and dead technology.

so should I upgrade my ram too?

Depends on your budget. You can not use a DDR2 on a DDR3 board and vice versa :)  So if you get a new board, you have to get new RAM.

my ram is corsair vengeance low profile 8gb ddr3 1600mhz dual channel kit

Then it's fine if you want to get a new mobo.

i'm just thinking if i did need/want to get a new motherboard, would it be better getting an intel chip? the thing i like about that cpu is its a big upgrade over my current one and i've found it for just over £100, the intel cpus are like double

preferably i'd like a good performance increase hopefully by just changing gpu and cpu, if this motherboard is not good enough then i would change it too so would it be a good upgrade without changing the ram and motherboard

if you were to go with intel I´d suggest you look at the i5 4690k and a z97 motherboard in total that should be a little under 350€ and you wouldn´t have to get the most powerfull cooler

Oh yes! :)
the i5 4690k is a very good gaming CPU and it´s at a good price (for intel :p  )
