You would have to contact the manufacturer for the actual answer to that question.

Does it vary manufacturer to manufacturer? Would anybody here know first hand whether the warranty is voided or still valid

If the warranty is transferable, how would they know you were mining with it?

If it wasn't overclocked, what could be damaged anyway.
From what a understand the board and the CPU does very little in mining since you can use a Semperon.

The thing is that with any used part you don't know how much it was potentially damaged, overclocked, etc. In the case of a motherboard the person before you may have overclocked some of the components which means turning up the voltage for that port area of the board, and in turn could have caused damage or at least decreased the life or the board(or that port). So, while mining for crypto currency itself may not be what really matters for the manufacturer voiding or validating the warranty, the idea that the person may have done something negatively to the system and possibly the board may.

Also, the board may not be designed for constant usage, if the person went cheap on a motherboard to save money. That is why I personally don't buy used.

Im sorry I dont know much about this area, just trying to be careful. Thanks for your input. The guy bought it on amazon and it has a warranty until December next year and this is what he said to me "Everything is set up by default. I didn't tune anything. The motherboard was used in a rig for cryptocurrencies mining. 4 GPUs were running stable for long periods of time plugged to this motherboard." By saying he didnt tune anything does this mean he hasn't overclocked?

Tune isn't a term generally used, so who knows.

He probably means he made no changes in the BIOS.
If so, he didn't overclock.

Edit
I see no need to overclock a miner, CPU.
The slowest PC CPU can run multiple video cards. (Semperon)

Why would you overclock the CPU, when the video cards are doing all the work.

That is how I would take it to mean. But you can always ask specifically about overclocking so that you have it in black and white for proof if you do notice something after purchase.

It is an ASROCK FX990 EXTREME 9, so it wouldn't exactly be classed as cheap but not top of the range. If I was to get this for 40 euro cheaper than retail would it be worth it? It was bought in December 2013 fyi

I would pass, personally. Not just because I don't buy used. But because I don't think that a 40 euro savings is worth getting it used and missing out on 9 months of warranty.
