Last time I tried to boot my computer, the motherboard posted correctly (single short beep), but the machine shut itself down as soon as it reached the windows start up screen.

I tried replacing the CMOS battery, resetting the BIOS, reapplying the thermal paste on the CPU and the heatsink. There is no evident physical damage in any of the components (the mobo capacitors look okay).

Now, the monitor has no display, the CPU fan whirs and stops after five seconds.

How did I make it even worse ? :'(

Rig: Amd Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2.7 Ghz processor,
MSI MS 7309 motherboard,
Kingston 2 GB DDR2 800 Mhz Ram,
Seagate Barracuda 160 GB 7200 rpm hdd.

p.s. The same build was shutting down in the previous cabinet, the technician told me the power switch of the cabinet was damaged and replaced it with a generic cabinet. Now I think there's something rotten in the State of Denmark :|

If the same problem persists, did he simply con me?

I tried booting in safe mode and entering the Bios, neither of them worked. There is still no display and the machine keeps shutting itself off within 5 seconds.

looks like a hardware failure either the psu or the motherboard is defective i think its the motherboard. Its better if u remove all the connections from the motherboard and the psu remove the ram ,hdd & dvdrom sata cables from the board along with the front pannel connectors also remove any usb devices like mouse keyboard and reinstall everything.

I have 4 standoffs missing from the motherboard (only one is there), can that cause short circuit?
