I just bought a dell xps 8000 desktop from ebay to use as a budget gaming computer. it is an intel core i5 750 2.67GHz Lynnfield.
It came with a NVidia GeForce GT220 1gb DDR3.
My question is can I significantly upgrade the graphics card with the form factor of this tower without upgrading the psu, and if so, which card would give me the most bang for my buck. If i cannot significantly upgrade the graphics card to a directx11 compatible video card then what is the cheapest power supply that will definitely be compatible with my system that is at least 500 watts? Also if i have to upgrade my power supply, then at what point are the new graphics cards that are out right now overkill. As in what is enough to run modern games well, generally speaking? Thanks

Solution
I would say that your best bet is to go with the gtx 750/ gtx750ti GPU's as they will happily run on a power supply which will only supply 300W and these cards will run new games at medium settings @1080p using dx11

Thx Nuckles_56, not one to wait, I wound up buying a EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti FTW w/ EVGA ACX Cooling off of ebay while waiting for a response. I'm glad that you verified for me that I didn't make a mistake purchasing this, lol. Thanks again.

Hey, I have XPS 8000, and recently upgraded my graphic card to EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti FTW as well. Everything works fine except sleep(S3)/wake up -> black screen->hang. With previous card Dell OEM GTX 260, there was no such sleep/wake up issue.

I am wondering if you have the same issue?

This post is a little old. But I was wondering.. I have the exact same computer and would like to upgrade the GPU to a 750 Ti. So I was just wanting to know if it was working for you.

I am using GTX 750ti right now. No problem at all. Less power consumption, and much better graphic performance.

If I can piggyback on this question, I'm attempting to help a friend upgrade his XPS 8000 graphics card. He can get his hands on a 10 inch MSI GTX 950 2GD5T OC for cheap, but that seems like a snug fit to me. Anyone know if the XPS 8000 tower can handle a card that size?
