CPU Cooling on x99 question

I just ordered everything to upgrade to haswell-e but I have one question that I hope somebody can answer.

The intel 5930k does not come with a cooling fan and I'm upgrading from AMD so I don't have any Intel socket fans. I will be running a custom liquid cooling loop but I want to test the cpu before installing the loop (would be a pain to drain the loop if the cpu didn't work).

Can I test my cpu without putting thermal paste or a heatsink on? Not extensive testing just to make sure it boots up and then I would shut the system down. If not, can anyone suggest a super cheap 2011 socket cpu heatsink?

Thanks for any info!

I wouldn't do it, it's too risky, it may damage the CPU. Don't worry it will most certainly work, there's a 1% chance it won't. Also, I recommend the 5820K unless you're planning to have multiple cards, otherwise the extra price on the 5930K is not worthy.

It's a pretty large chip. Will your heat sing cover it? Note the max case temp also.

I don't have a cpu water block yet... Waiting on a reply from frozen cpu to let me know if the 2011 socket water blocks will work with the 2011-3 socket. I read an article about overclocking the new haswell-e processors and the liquid cooling loop they were using was a 2011 socket cpu water block on the new Asus x99 deluxe. So hopefully any 2011 water block will work.
