Can't extend displays with one VGA monitor and one DVI monitor

I want to be able to extend my display across two monitors, one is a low res VGA only monitor and one is a 1080p DVI monitor. I can duplicate the displays but it makes it so that my better monitor has a low resolution. I want to extend the displays, but I get a message saying "These display settings cannot be saved, please try a different combination of display settings". I have an R9 270x and am using a DVI-A / VGA converter. Any help would be appreciated

Basically, it says that to extend the display it will set all of the monitors to the resolution of the "smallest resolution" of any of the monitors.
