How powerful a GPU required to run a new G-Sync Asus ROG Swift PG278Q at max res?

I am looking to purchase a new gaming laptop and soon, a new Asus ROG Swift PG278Q gaming monitor to take advantage of the new g-sync technology.

My question is: how powerful of a GPU do I need to run games like sc2/dota2 and a other slightly more demanding games on maxed out settings @ 2560 x 1440 resolution at 40-50fps+ (smooth frame-rates during game play).

Because I want to take advantage of g-sync and will be purchasing a gaming laptop, I will need to get a nvidia GTX 850M - GTX 880M, but because of the 1440 resolution being higher and significantly more demanding then 1080p, I assume I will need a GPU at least as powerful as a GTX 860 or above to get smooth frame-rates.

Does anybody have any experience running games at 2560 x 1440 resolution and what kind of minimum GPU requirements will be required for smooth gameplay?

Moreover, any gaming laptop recommendations are welcome. I am currently trying to decide on a new Alienware 17/18 or a ASUS ROG g750 series. thank you so much in advanced for your feedback.

never liked Alienware, overpriced for me. people like asus, so i guess that is a good choice. get 3-4gb gpu if possible, high resolution will eat up the memory just like that.
I never owned a laptop though, as i like things to be selected by parts and upgradable.

so that's the limit of the advise that i can give

I use an external monitor with my laptop for when I'm home gaming using an external keyboard/mouse. I really love gaming laptops/desktop replacements because they are more portable then desktop towers when I go to LANs (and I LAN 2-3 times a week), but I need a computer powerful enough to run the most demanding games released today.

then get one with the 880m in it the best gpu for laptops.

it's a gathering of gamers in the same room where they compete against each other, where they show off their rigs and where they exchange games/movies etcetc.
it's basicly a "nerd" party, it's quite nice!

Does anyone know for sure if the nvid GTX 880m 4g be enough to run games smoothly on a 27" 2560x1440 display? I'm really looking forward to being able to invest in a new gsync monitor so I can see the performance difference that is apparently quite significant.

does anybody have any idea if a new line of nVidia cards will be released around the end of this month/next month? I've heard that a new line of cards is on the way soon, but wanted to know if anyone has heard from any official source that this is the case as this would especially interest me because I'm looking to purchase a new comp soon.
