Alright, so this might be a stupid question, but I've been out of the game for quite a long time (my last gaming PC was almost 10 years ago). Just got myself a decent gaming rig, got it last week;

A88XM-E35;

Athlon X4 750 3.4Ghz;

Radeon R9 270X 2Gb;

STD 1333 DDR3 4Gb;

HDD 500Gb;

500W Raidmax ATX (I've been told that this was more than enough for my specs if I don't overclock);

Windows 7.

And even though I can run games pretty smoothly, I always run in average drops in the fps from time to time, not huge drops, but frequent small ones, from Half-Life 2 to Titanfall and Skyrim; with Vsync on of course, and when it's turned off it's freaking smooth, but the tearing is unbearable.

So my question is -- is there something wrong or I just have to live with either Vsync on and drops or Vsync off and terrible tearing?

Thanks for the reply!

the small drops are normal with even the best gpus. in heavily crowded area they use more resources and need more gpu power dont be worried.

Gosh, I hit solved by accident lol

Well what I mean is that even in awkward places like in Skyrim in the corner of a room or in Half-Life 2 where there's no action. It feels more like staggering and I actually tried with a FPS counter and it only drops from 60 to like 57-55. I never even experienced that kind of "staggering" or drops on consoles. So I was guessing that something might be wrong

Well if Vsync is off everything runs smoothly without any problems (obviously) but with a lot of tearing, and when it is on there's no tearing, but it feels like it drops or skips frame sometimes, almost like it was below 30 or even 20 at times. I totally understand when there's too much action, but sometimes it really feel for no reason, especially on a game as old as Half-Life 2.

For example on Titanfall it happens like 80% of the time. It's really hard to explain to be honest, I don't think I'm using the right words, I'll try to make a video and post it.

Yeah man if you can unselect it would be nice. Sorry, not that your answer is not appreciated, far from it actually, but I just don't want the thread to be marked as solved yet!

Hm awesome, seems like we have the same problem, though I do use my TV with my GPU, only the HDMI is plugged in right now and unplugged from the TV. And Vsync is forced on my CCC and turned off in games most of the time (it doesn't work in every games) and it's almost the same. So I'm using a external software called RadeonPro the tweak the settings around, but doesn't seem to help the stuttering.

Maybe my monitor is the problem http://www.cnet.com/products/hp-2010i-lcd-monitor-20-se...

Otherwise I just don't get why a PC like mine can't handle Half-Life 2 without drops or stuttering with Vsync on

i dont think it is affected. try seeing if your drivers are up to date.

Yeah I checked that as well, updated my GPU driver yesterday and all my drivers were updated last week when I got my PC

so you have tried it with the gpu only connected to the monitor and not the tv.

Well for some reasons the weird stuttering doesn't happen anymore, when it does it's just the normal fps drops (though it still happens with Half-Life 2, which is a 10 years old game). I downloaded RadeonPro and I'm using that to lock the fps and force Vsync and disabled Vsync in CCC and in-game.

Though the HDMI is still plugged into my cpu but not into my television (like it was before).

i think the driver download worked. or the radeonpro is working.
