I need to know which upgrades are possible for this unit. It is a Compaq Presario V2000Z series from what I see. It is a V2718WM laptop. I understand it will have limited upgradability because of it being a laptop, I just want to make it as good as possible. So what I am looking for is this...

1. Anyone been able to get 2 x 2 gb sticks of RAM to run in it? If so, what bios version is needed?
2. Anyone see a problem with it running (or installing and using) Windows 7 64 bit?
3. Anyone been able to upgrade to a dual core 64 bit CPU? If so, which ones?

This is the product specs from HP - http://

Anyone who can help with this, the help is greatly appreciated.

1) This laptop supports up to 2gb max ram.
2) It should work fine with Win 7.
3) Laptops are either difficult to upgrade, or not possible to upgrade at all if the cpu is soldered to the motherboard. Unless it was advertised that you can swap the CPU I would advise against doing so. That feature is only found in high end laptops in any case.

I understand the specs say maximum of 2 gb, I was more wondering if someone who has/had this laptop tried more since I have found in machines that said 512mb max I could run 1 gb total (2x256 or 2x512). I am hoping someone has tried it and succeeded or can tell me it definitely won't (I can't try yet as I haven't received the laptop yet).

Also, research so far says the cpu is socket 754, which should be able to be swapped out, I am again looking for someone who put a dual core in same socket to know if it can/will work. It is for a 9 year old so not looking for highend, just best efficiency.

If 2gb is truly max, then I will likely keep it at 1gb and use Linux.

I would not be spending $100. I spent $36 on the laptop and I plan on spending another $20ish on the CPU to replace it with a little faster of a processor. I can buy single core cpus for this design and get away with less than $15 for a faster one than I have now and sell the one it has for $3-5 to make a part of that back. Still better than spending $100+ on another system. As mentioned, this is for a 9 year old - not me to game on (I have a i5 desktop for that).
