Ok, hello fellows!

As most of us know, the Nvidia GTX 900 series is coming soon. This will most likely lead to a drop in the curent 700 series prices.
For a while now, I was leaning to get the 770, mainly because it's the best I can afford.
I just wanted to know if the price breakdown that'll LIKELY happen will put the GTX 780 at the same (+50$max) price as the 770 currently is.

In a more direct way, should I get the GTX 770 right now and be happy or should I wait for the GTX 780 to drop its price?

Any help is much appreciated!

First of all, i think you meant the gtx 800 series and not the 900.

Now, its just a suggestion, but have you conisdered the AMD Radeon r9 290? It offers the same if not better perfomance than the gtx 780 and it goes for around $350-$400.

If I'm not mistaken Nvidia will skip the 800 series because some confusion might be generated thanks to the 800M series.
Besides that in my country the R9 costs more 100$ than the GTX 770 and that's to big of a jump for me.

Is it worth dropping my 70$ SSD that I was going to use as a boot drive for the R9 290?

nvidia will be skipping 800 series and the new GPUs will be 9xx.

As for OPs question, it depends on the performance of the new series and their prices. Just wait and we will see, but most likely 770 will drop to 760+~$50 and 780 to 770+~$50-$75.

Nvidia will 'NOT' skip the 800 series desktop GPU's. The 700m series came out before the desktops and so did the 6-5-400m series. The 880 and 870 are confirmed for release THIS MONTH. I would wait for the 880, It's going to be $50 cheaper than the 780. Also has a lower TDP (less wasted electricity, overclocks better, lower temps), outperforms the 780 (non TI) by 30%, and has 1GB more VRAM. AKA wins all around.

I would recommend you drop the SSD and go for the r9 290.

So now I have to deal with a dilema, dropping the SSD and getting the R9 290, or, as most of the others tried to say, wait for the new series. As I originally posted I do not have the money to buy anything better than the GTX 770 RIGHT NOW (without cutting on any other parts like the SSD that I was going to use as a boot drive). So the new series will be revealed this month, and if I do wait for it does it include a price drop for the existing series? Or if not, will the GTX 870 come at the same price if not better than the 770? Another fact to add up to this is that I live in Portugal, so I'd have to wait another couple of weeks or so for the cards to get here.

Out of this conversation I've gotten 4 main ideas:
Drop the SSD and get the R9 290;
Wait for the next Nvidia series to arrive and get one of the new cards (probably the 870 with the new Maxwell architecture);
Wait for the next Nvidia series to arrive and get one of the older cards, MAYBE with a price decrease; and finally
Buy a GTX 770 right now and go with my inicial plan.

I'd like to know what do you all guys think of those options!

I believe Nvidia will skip the 800 desktop series, since it has already publicly said so and the 800M series is based on old architectures, Kepler and Fermi, whilst the new series will have the new Maxwell one!
