I'm building a new PC and want to give overclocking a shot for the first time. I've decided on the i5 4690k for my CPU. I THOUGHT I'd decided on the Asus z97-A mobo, but something keeps telling me to maybe go with something else. I'm thinking maybe along the lines of a Sabertooth Mark 2, but I can't really figure out of the extra money I'd be spending is worth it. What am I getting that I actually NEED or will use for the money? I'm not dead set on Asus, but I've had good luck with my current one (P5Q Pro Turbo with a Q9550 CPU, not overclocked), so I'll probably stick with them unless someone gives me a convincing argument to go a different route.

Also, this may be a dumb question but something I read in another post is making me question it, but does a PSU need to match a CPU/mobo? I currently have a Rosewill RX950-D-B that I didn't plan on replacing. Obviously I will if I have to, but if that PSU will work with a 4690k and z97 mobo I'm gonna stick with it. Thanks in advance!

First off, all of your parts can be different brands and compatible, as long as all the sockets match (e.g. LGA 1150 CPU and mobo). The PSU will work with the mobo, but it's not the greatest PSU and probably worth an upgrade if you're going for a high end build. What GPU are you getting?

You don't get much of a performance increase for your dollar with motherboards. More expensive motherboards will overclock better and have better cooling and have a better quality build and parts but this translates to little, if any performance increase in gaming. Motherboards are one of the last items I put money towards. Not saying you can get a POS mobo, just that I'd rather an entry level Z mobo with a good GPU than a high end Z mob with a GPU that is $100 cheaper because of this. If I was going for a new build, the first mobo i'd look to is the Asrock Extreme4 for a good quality, reliable, decent overclocking board and anything I could afford that was better than that would be a bonus.

Thanks for the response. I knew about CPU and RAM needing to match the mobo, but I saw something in another post where someone was asking about their build that said "that PSU isn't compatible with Haswell" or something to that effect, so it just made me wonder. I'd never heard that before, so I thought I should be safe and check. If I should upgrade the PSU, where is a good place to start?

As for my GPU, I just bought a GTX 660 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00966IREK/ref=oh_aui_...) back in January. Kinda wish I hadn't because now I could get a GTX 760 for what I paid, but such is life. I'm considering getting a mobo that's SLI capable so I can grab another 660 if/when the price drops even more. If I'm not mistaken, doing that I can get better performance than a 770.

A sabertooth is good, or if you live in eu a ranger, but sabertooth definitely worth it, comes with 5 year warranty, easy to use bios, made from military spec materials so it's more durable and reliable and the bios is very easy to use, if you can afford the mk2, definitely go for it, very good oc board

I live in the US, so no Ranger. What's the difference between a Mark 2 and the Z97 A though? Even looking at an Asus comparison chart, I saw very little that meant anything to me. Nothing that I thought would justify the extra $40 for it, but maybe I'm missing something? Am I just paying extra for the warranty and "better" parts? Are the bios different? I would have assumed that bios for an Asus mobo was the same no matter which board I got.

Yeah, you're paying for better parts and the longer warranty mostly, no, because sabertooth is part of the TUF series, you get the command centre bios instead of ai suite 3, have you thought about the gryphon? The armoured version looks very good and it's the same price as the mk2 but matx
