Hey there,

So my current situation is that I want to build a rig that is capable of high/ultra settings in pretty much all games. Pretty intensive use but I am on a pretty tight budget, in the form that I can either buy a badass monitor or a decent graphics card that will last me for a few years.

I was thinking of getting a Asus ROG Swift PG278Q monitor and therefore I will need a graphics card to go along with it. I don't know whether to buy this now then invest in newer graphics cards (like the new nvidia cards that are supposed to be released this year) later or buy a graphics card now.

Obviously with a 1440p monitor I will need a good graphics card but I can't decide between the Sapphire Radeon R9 290 however I can't use G-SYNC with this being an AMD card or using 2 Asus 770's using SLI and then G-SYNC. 780ti's seem too pricey for what you get, I might as well get a Titan Black. So for a single card setup I might as well stretch to the Titan Black?

So really I have two questions:

What should I buy first, my monitor or graphics card?

Which graphics card should I buy that will get the most out of my monitor for the best price?

Here are my specs anyway :

CPU - Intel Core i7 4790k 4.0GHz

CPU Cooler - Corsair H80i 77.0 CFM liquid cooler

Motherboard - Asus Sabertooth Z97 Mark 1

Ram - 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600

SSD - Samsung 840 Evo 250GB

HDD - Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB

Video Card - Sapphire Radeon R9 290 or Asus Geforce GTX 770's SLI or (not sure what brand yet) Geforce GTX Titan Black or something that will soon be released

Case - Cougar Challenger O orange PC case

PSU - Corsair RM 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully modular ATX power supply

Peripherals - Cougar 700m Mouse, Cougar 700k Keyboard, Turtle Beach Atlas Headset

GTX titan black is overkill but it would make the best out of your monitor, also get your monitor first, if your inpatience, Or you could get the graphic card first and admire it

I use a GTX 770 with a 1440p monitor. This is pushing the 2GB video RAM limit in some games (e.g. Skyrim with mods).
I've found I can get good performance from Skyrim and Far Cry 3 at this resolution by disabling MSAA.

If you wanted to go with the GTX 770s in SLI, choose 4GB models.
Personally I think SLI or Crossfire are generally more trouble than they are worth.
A GTX 780 or higher comes with 3GB of video memory and you'll find the performance pretty good.
Moving to AMD means losing gsync, which seems a shame with this monitor.
If it were me, I'd wait for the new Nvidia cards coming out soon.

You also haven't mentioned your power supply.
With any of the single GPU setups mentioned, a good quality 600W power supply would be plenty.
If you are considering the GTX 770 cards in SLI or any dual-GPU card, you will want a good quality 800W supply.
