GTX 770 vs AMD R9 280X

Solution

Go with Build 1. However is it possible if you upgrade the PSU on build one to a 600W minimum. Since you can overclock your CPU, I recommend a tier 1 or 2 PSU. Here's the list...
In my opinion the Nvidia 770 is way better than the AMD R9 280X. If you wanted to compare the 280X to a Nvidia card. Then it will be between a Nvidia 760 and 770, which there isn't a card like that. So what I am also trying to say is the AMD R9 280X is still a great card.

So between the two, you may already know that the Nvidia 770 is way better in performance. So what else is so special about this and what we may need to consider?

Nvidia consume less power than AMD and you can take the advantage to record gameplay with Shadowplay, but Mantle still isn't that well know yet.

You will need to take the PSU into consideration if you do get a AMD R9 280X, a 550W is preferable. Please tell me your PSU.

And one ire thing both cards will go well with FX-8350.

Wait, WHERE is the GTX770 "way" better in performance? They are actually EXTREMELY close in performance.

Here is a relative comparison chart at 1080p resolution.

HOWEVER, as mentioned above, is your PSU up for the job of running these GPUs?

this is build 1:
FX8350
8GB 1600Mhz
MSI NVIDIA GTX770 2GB DDR5
1TB Hard Drive
GIGABYTE 78LMT-USB3 mobo
XFX Pro Series 550W 80+ Bronze 120mm Fan Power Supply Unit

build 2 is:
Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3
AMD FX 8350
8gb 1600mhz
1tb Seagate
AMD Radeon R9 280X 3gb
Corsair CX600 80 Plus Bronze 600w Power Supply

I want a future proof card that will play games (they don't have to be max , just above low) for the next 3 years, a system that can run it with no Bottlenecks (i cant see any that would occur)while also allowing me to do some school work like autocad.

Also don't forget the fan for both builds.

The R9 280X might be a little better since you want a "future proof" system (nothing's really future proof, at best future resistant). It has more VRAM than the GTX 770.
But the XFX power supply is higher quality than the Corsair CX600.

Personally I'd want a better motherboard for an FX-8350.

Its not better, they each have their merrits, if you look at higher than 1080p resolution then the R9 280x starts looking better.

Not to mention it overclocks a lot better.

The GTX770 has shadowplay and PhysX if thats your thing. So there is not better, just SIMILAR performance and some specific functions.

STAY AWAY from that motherboard.

Get the XFX 550w PSU, its good enough for either graphics card.
