I've built my first computer and its been fine for a few months. Suddenly I get a disk read error so Windows 8 won't boot. Its occasionally able to boot if I swap the sata cable from the disk drive to the hard drive and when it happens again I swap them back and it works again, unsure why? Also it seems to boot if I put the boot CD in and let it go through to the hardrive boot, again no idea why this works?

Any ideas on what the problem might be? When its boots everything is normal nothing lost. I did a diagnostic from the Western Digital site and it said nothing was wrong

Its a Western Digital Blue Caviar 1 TB hard drive

Any help greatly appreciated

Solution
Hey, Joseph!

I'm really sorry to hear about your issue.
I suggest you try chkdsk in the Command Prompt (run as administrator) once you boot successfully. This will tell you if there are any physical errors on the drive.
Since it boots from all ports (at different points of time), the problem may be in the SATA cable itself. My suggestion would be change the cable.
Another thing you can try is changing the BIOS drive settings to user-specified and select the LBA manually. This might be the fix as well.
If these solutions don't work, I'd recommend to back up your data and RMA your drive.
