Im buying a cpu and mobo this evening and dont quite have enough money for the corsair h100i.
I was wondering if i use the stock intel cooler for the 4790k for a few weeks if it would make a difference. (i will not be overclocking until i get the h100i)

More about : cons stock cooler

From what I know the i7-4790K has heat problems without an aftermarket cooler even when not overclocked. However if it will only be for a few weeks, then the stock cooler will be fine. However NO NO NO overclock at all without an aftermarket cooler.

i thought the 4790k was pretty much the 4770k but the 4790k was engineered to be slightly cooler?

Yes it is. But I have heard many review when people couldn't afford to buy an aftermarket cooler and stayed with the stock. They had high temperature at about 70°C or so when running games with the stock cooler.

Although i do have a zalman 35mm Long life bearing CPU Cooler. But its about 4 years old. I still use it on my old AMD build. You think it would be better if i just used that instead of the stock cooler for a few weeks?

Don't get an H100i. There are just so many better options that I don't even understand (except for Corsair Link) why people still buy it.

Get a noctua nh d15 instead and stcok will hold out fine if you don't oc till you get the cooler

You will be just fine with the stock cooler for a few weeks. Just don't overclock, and watch to make sure your temps don't go over the max limits. If they do, just wait to do demanding tasks until you get a nicer cooler.

Definitely! Better to have an aftermarket cooler than not one.

Yeah that would be great. Just make sure you have the proper mounting kit.

Whats wrong with the h100i? And can you list some other solutions?

It's not that it's bad, it's just that it's overpriced, it's the imac of the cpu coolers, it does a good job, but there are cheaper alternatives which are cheaper like noctua nh d14, it's just a fad really

It is just loud, and overrated. You can get better options for much cheaper. Better options would be:

Noctua NH-D15 (on sale at NCIXUS.com but normally $99) $75 ; dual tower air cooler

Swiftech H220 (expandable) $99 ; 240mm; aio

NZXT Kraken X41 $99 ; 140mm; aio (keep in mind that the 140mm aio and 240mm aio's are about the same in terms of performance)

Cooler Master Glacier 240l (expandable) $99; 240mm aio

Corsair H105 (still a bit loud but it performs better than the h100i) $114; 240mm aio

Swiftech H220x (expandable) (newer version of H220) $140; 240mm aio

NZXT Kraken X61 $140; 280mm aio

Swiftech H320 (expandable) $150; 360mm aio

Past $150 you can get into custom loops such as an xspc 360mm kit.

If you have any questions regarding which performs the best or which is the quietest or whatever let me know.
