How does Directv locate their receivers?

I recently had Directv hooked up at my house. Right now I haven't connected it to my home network. In order to stay a little more private while my family is browsing the web we have things in place that help "mask" our IP. When this is done the IP used appears to be from a location away from where the Directv service is installed. If I connect to the internet will Directv think I'm using their service somewhere else, or should I just deal with not being able to connect the box to the internet?

Solution
DirecTV doesn't track your IRD's location via ethernet. At this point, they are relying on visual verification by technicians on service calls and information picked up when the customer speaks with Customer Service.

The locals are spot beamed and controlled by the physical address you have reported to DirecTV.

I didn't know how this might affect the local channels I receive also. If they said/did anything at all.

local channel reception is controlled by the satellite geographically, and by directv's programming supply, your individualized authorization controls what broadcasts you can receive and geographic spot beams restrict where that signal can be received. the issue associated with your IP address should cause no issues with your broadcasts, only with proper routing of online content you request. as in for example you have a canadian IP address you're spoofing or whatever might prevent online content from directv that has US only distribution.

If you are not using a router based VPN - that is, you use proxies and / or software VPN on your computers, the DirectV set top box is unaffected and will continue to appear to be using your ISP provided IP.
