How to change the icon of a shortcut??

So i just made a shortcut of a .exe file to my desktop.
I didn't like the icon it had so i wanted to change it. None of the other icons on my computer fitted the purpose so i wanted to download a New icon, which turned out to be much harder than i had expected.
I googled some Pictures of and found something that mad esense, and savedw the Picture on my computer.
Then i right clicked on the shortcut of the program, clicked Properties, change icon, browse, and then I went to the Place where i had saved the Picture, but it wasn't there.
I have tried many different Things but none of them have worked.
Does the Picture need to be a special format or can it just be a png?
How can I download a picture and then use it as an icon for a shurtcut on my desktop?

i use this site for very long never had problems and you have to download the ICO file save it in a folder and select the icons form there remember moving or deleting the folder or the icons will set the icons to default u have to do all over again so first choose a drive for it and keep all the icons file there.
and nothing is going to harm your computer i am using the site for a more than 3 years.

here is a site i prefer for changing icons just download the icons save it in a proffered location the right click on the shortcut properties change icon browse to the icon file you have downloaded and set it job done.

self made icons dont turn out to be good looking especially if you keep the icons at EXTRA large what i usually do and there is no 3d effect .

yes i know about this site, but i heard that somee People have said that it causes a lot of pop ups. I did however try to press download png | 256px, but this only showed the Picture on a blamk site in the browser, like when you press see Picture on Google Pictures, and it did not seem to download anything. There were however two other file types i could try to download (download ICO, download ICNS), but i'm a bit too paranoid and i was afraid it would harm my computer, so i decided to ask here first. Which file type should i download?
