Hi,

So I have this problem with the router being so far from my computer (Like 20 meters) and my TP-Link WN721N USB Wi-Fi adapter can't connect to it.

What I did was I got a TP-Link access point/repeater which is TP-Link WA901A 300Mbps (HAS 3 ANTENNAS FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!) and I placed it between my computer and the original router and chose the "Universal Repeater" mode (And then tried Bridge with AP mode).

What I am getting is a signal of -71db and less (Its negative, i.e -75db is less), the computer can connect, but I am barely receiving 40% of the full speed and sometimes it spikes during gaming.

The second thing I did was remove the USB Wi-Fi adapter and use a cable to connect my computer to the TP-Link router and place this router next to my computer (It has 3 antennas, it should connect to a 20 meter router, shouldn't it?) and chose the Client mode. (So the TP-Link router acts as an adapter now).

But now, the connection keeps disconnecting between the two routers, even though the TP-Link router says that it has a signal of 4/5 (Which is great), but it keeps disconnecting and doesn't receive a good speed. I have tried changing the channels but channel 1 was the best. Here is a picture of the TP-Link router survey list:

I can't move the original router as my connection is Wimax. If I use my brother's laptop and move next to the original router, I get full speed and no spikes in online games, so the problem is not with my ISP.

Wow that site survey you show is a mess. I would not use channel 1. On 2.4Ghz you have only 3 non-overlapping channels 1, 6, and 11. So you need to use one of those. If you have to share frequency it is better to be on the exact channel as something else as opposed to a channel overlapping. Channels 2-5 overlap channel 1 so on your scan you have 6 networks overlapping (or coexisting) on channel 1. Channels 2-10 overlap channel 6. So you have 6 channels overlapping (or coexisting) on channel 6. Channels 7-10 Overlap 11. So on channel 11 you have 3 channels that overlap (or coexist). I would try channel 11 to see if that works better (the only problem being you have a very strong signal from another AP on channel 11). Make sure you have your channel width on the 2.4Ghz band set to 20Mhz, not auto or 40. Also, if your router can do it, try changing the encryption to WPA2-AES as it is a little better encryption, but more importantly in your case, usually has higher throughput.
What is the make and model of your main router? Can it also do 5Ghz?

I just read where you say you get full speed on your brothers laptop wireless when he is close. If this is consistent on channel 1 then swapping the channels is not going to help. If you can swing it I would purchase this and use it as an antenna and connect it to your PC with an ethernet cord:

I had a setup like yours but I was trying to use an Apple Airport as the bridge device hardwired to my computer. I had a constant connection but terrible throughput. Like 2 Mb/s. I ended up purchasing a Ubiquiti Nanostation Loco and tried it. My signal improved by over 20db and my noise floor was much better because the Nanostation is directional, thus does not get as much interference. My speed now test out at around 70Mbit/s.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. However, I actually don't want to spend any more money on this stupid problem, I have already spent too much, everyone kept telling me: "Buy this!", "Buy that!" and I ended up spending over $100 just to get a good Wi-Fi signal to a 20 meter away room.

I have noticed something weird with the TP-Link router, its that, wherever I place it, I just get a signal between -60 and -70, but today, I restarted the router, and suddenly I got a signal of -25 on my computer with the wifi usb dongle, it actually stayed like that and I was able to test it by pinging it, it was actually pretty fast!

But after I restarted the router again, I got the same weak signal as before.

I mean if we can know the reason of the sudden boost, I can fix this problem once and for all.
