Need the cores and the ghz, I can either buy an i7 4790k or wait for the new line of proccesors and z99 mobo's. Currently I have a z87 MSI
And a terrible intel i3 3220.

Also are ghz or cores more important for running a server?

Thanks

Or you could get a Xenon. Great server chips on Either X79, Z/H97/Q85, or wait for the E5 Xenon v3s on X99. Up to 20 cores (single chip that is, if you run Dual CPU, it's going to be 40 cores/80 Threads. Overkill I assure you, and way too expensive) , and are the best for servers and supercomputers. What exactly will you do on this server of yours? Consider looking in to Professional GPUs, 64 GBs of RAM and the 850 PRO SSD

Depending on application, but there is usually a minimum number of cores certain software will run properly on, and any more cores won't be as good for performance than GHz or IPC increase. Note that most consumer grade applications aren't optimized for more than 6 cores, but some pro applications can take 20 easily...
no ghz arent really important a x99 mobo/ i7 5820k,5930k,5960x are all server cpu that are best for it but a i7 4790k would do well also. the new cpus are all ready out but the ddr4 ram is 100$ for 16gb,200-300$ more for 32gb and up.

Note: kunthakenthe said that core ixes are server CPUs, that is not correct, as the Core ixes are consumer CPUs and Enthusiast CPUs, and largely less stable than Core Xenons.

I do a lot of 3d art and model ling and the render times are just ridiculous, also I was planning on running a minecraft server to make some cash but it looks like 4gb ram won't do for 70+ players (;.

I've seen xeons and such before but aren't they more like server grade rather than consumer?

actually xeons are server cpus and can be used for his rendering and editing.

That. Is what I said. What you said was "i7 5820k,5930k,5960x are all server cpu" Core i7s are not Core Xeons. One is a Consumer/SMB/Enthusiast Product one is Professional/Server. The i7s you named would belong in the Enthusiast segment.

No, they belong in the Enthusiast segment. If they were Server CPUs they would not have unlocked multipliers.

so all that cache and HT and cores are just for enthusiast there made more for the proffesional segment and are much cheaper solutions to those beastly 20 core xeons.
