Hi folks

Well, this is it for me. I ordered my parts yesterday for my first build. Needless to say, I am very nervous as this will be my first build.

I have prepared for myself an installation guide to make sure I do not omit any steps. I would appreciate if you folks who have been building several computers over the years could look at my guide and see if I did not forget anything or if any given step is out of order.

My build will include 2 x 1TB drives. 1 x 1TB drive for Windows and Programs and the other for data..No SSD (tight budget. Will wait another 6 months to a year) . I am planning to have all my data on 2 separate drives. Backup, backup, backup. The OS will be Windows 7 64-bit OEM. All my parts were ordered from Newegg Canada since I reside in Canada.

So, here is my guide. See notes at the bottom

First computer build installation guide.

Install optical drive into the case

Install CPU into motherboard

Install CPU stock cooler (thermal paste already applied)

Plug the CPU stock cooler fan to the motherboard

Install RAM

Install motherboard standoffs required for my specific motherboard making sure I put in the same numbers as there are holes on the motherboard.

Install motherboard I/O shield to the case. Caution: edges could be sharp. Be careful.

Put motherboard into the case lining the holes of the I/O shield with the motherboard back ports

Screw motherboard in the standoffs holes

Connect the PSU 20+4 or 24 pin connector to the motherboard

Connect the 4+4 or 8 pin connector to the motherboard

Screw PSU to the case

Secure the 2 hard drives in place connecting only one to the PSU SATA connector for now. Plug in SATA data cable to the motherboard. This will be the boot drive

Connect the front panel connectors to the motherboard. The power switch and the reset switch do not need polarity (+ or – are irrelevant). Other connector need the polarity (+ or -) to the proper pins on the motherboard.

Double check and triple check all connections.

Press the power button. If everything looks OK insert the windows disk into the optical drive.

Change the boot sequence in the bios to make sure it boots from the Optical drive. Reboot the PC.

Install the Operating system.

Using previously downloaded drivers from the motherboard manufacturer onto a flash drive, install the drivers.

Notes:
This is where I get a little confused. Which drivers do I really need to install and importantly, in what specific order ? Which will be installed by Windows 7 ?

Please feel free to make any suggestions

A great many thanks to all who will care to help.

Solution
Get the stand offs in place before you install anything into the mb . You will need to place the mb in the case on the standoffs to check they are in the right place .

Then lay the board on the electrostatic bag it came in to install cpu/cooler/RAM

Usually the psu is installed first before the board . Some cases you must do it that way . Others its just a good idea since accidentally dropping the psu would suck

Set the boot order
put the dvd in the drive
press the reset button and then let the windows disk run
Once that is doione you will have a low quality desktop .
Install the drivers from the disk that came with the mb .
[ dont install the bloatware ]
Then install the graphics drivers

Done
