Me and my buddy were working on his new PC and we left it turned on on its side to go watch a video of what to do next (it was booting up fine but we couldn't get a bios or anything) then we smell burning plastic, we turned around and the thing was smoking from the top near the power button. We cut the power supply off unplugged it and took it outside, it stopped smoking somewhere along the way. Now it smells like burnt plastic and we took most everything apart looking for the problem. Any ideas? We are taking it to a specialist tomorrow but info would be great, we couldnt find anything wrong.

it happened to me 5 years ago. luckily there was no damage done to the rest of hardware. (a little scar on MOBO from a spark from PSU occurred but no circuitry on MOBO was involved.) and after replacing the PSU the PC worked fine. and still to this day it works.

so if u examine all the hardware and see no damage, then u successfully replace the PSU and all is fine; nothing watsoever is different- then like wat i went through- u will have plenty of proof that nothing u did caused the original faulty PSU to fail. and it was just made faulty. i guess it just happens. when i RMAed the PSU the person on the phone was apologetic and seemed to have heard of it having happened b4. examine everything all over. use extreme caution.
